The double drag system is sometimes known as a bait runner or bite n run or bait feeder or live liner. It allows you to have two different drag settings. With your rod in the holder, you can set the rear drag extremely light (1-2lbs). When a fish takes the bait, it'll run with it without feeling the tension and without you needing to leave your bail open and risking fouling up your line. As soon as you set the hook and you turn the handle, the reel will return to using the front drag.
